How safe are Moondance trips?

Safety is the number one priority on any Moondance program and we take this very seriously. We are very proud of our safety record. All of our leaders hold their Wilderness First Responder certification, an 8 day certification teaching emergency medical protocols in a wilderness setting. They have all been trained to handle emergency situations and can handle most minor emergency medical problems. We have a safety and evacuation plan for every area in which we travel. We carry extensive medical kits with us at all times. We want to teach each participant that responsible behavior, good judgment, and a concern for group safety are the most valuable commodities in the outdoors. We use only the finest outfitters and guide services for technical activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, or whitewater rafting.

What is the emphasis of Moondance?

One of the unique opportunities we have is to lead young people in areas that parents may not be able to. Much like teachers or coaches, we take great pride in the ability to inspire young people to gain an appreciation for the outdoors and more so, for themselves. These courses are not always easy, but as we say, challenge builds character.

What are your goals for individual students?

More than the backpacking or climbing, we want to teach young people life skills. We want them to come away saying "I can" and to feel they have learned more about trust, communication, responsibility and commitment. When a young person gains these skills, the road becomes much smoother.

What kind of rules do you have setup to ensure safety within the groups?

For the benefit of everyone in the group, we have certain guidelines that must be adhered to. We have our Standards of Behavior form that is signed by both the student and parent prior to the start of the trip. In it we make clear that illegal drugs, alcohol and cigarettes are not allowed and are grounds for immediate dismissal. In addition, abusive, destructive, violent or unsafe behavior, inappropriate sexual behavior, excessive swearing or theft will not be tolerated and may lead to immediate dismissal. These guidelines are discussed again prior to the start of the trip to remind everyone what the consequences are for conduct detrimental to the entire group.

Do you have any trips for me?

Yes! Though we have been designing custom trips for adults for years, we are now offering them as part of our program schedule. Check out our "Trips" page to see what we're offering this year.
